A Complete Guide to Your Holiday Lawn

FL 11 26 Blog

The last of the Thanksgiving leftovers have been gobbled up, and if you’re like many of us, that means it’s now time to deck the halls and rock around the Christmas tree (that is, if you haven’t already started your decorating!). Before you get wrapped up in your winter wonderland though, read through Fairway Lawns’ top tips to help your lawn survive the season’s decorations.

Prep Your Yard

’Tis the season for lights, garland and… lawn care? Tidying up your turf may not sound like a holiday festivity but creating a clean slate for your soon-to-come decor is a small step that leaves a big impact. Edge along hard surfaces of your property and rake away any fallen leaves that are dampening your Christmas curb appeal. Not only does this make your property look nicer, but it also makes it safer for future party guests.

Hold Off on Heavy Decorations

If your Christmas decorations are heavy, fight the festive urge to put out those pieces early. While we love your holiday spirit, your lawn will suffer the effects of compacted soil come spring. Instead, try to minimize the usage of these items or place them in places where you’re unconcerned about damage, like mulched areas, concrete, dirt patches or patios.

Safe-Guard Your Sprinklers

With summer a distant memory, many homeowners forget to consider their irrigation system during the most wonderful time of the year. Don’t be one of them! If you have to stake down any spirited items, be sure to familiarize yourself with the layout of your sprinklers to prevent a potential leak.

Set a Timer

This season, spend more time with your family and less time worrying about your display by putting your holiday lights on a timer. Not only does this save you some back and forth plugging and unplugging lights, but it also limits foot traffic which can cause a weakened, compacted and patchy yard.

Consider Electricity

From rain to frost, your lawn ornaments will likely endure some less-than-ideal environments over the next month. Make sure that your lights have no frays and that the extension cords are okay to be outside. This prevents unexpected shorting out, or even worse, an electrical fire. As a bonus tip, double check that your extension cord is plugged into a GFCI protected outlet. This small step could protect your home and lawn from potential fire damage.

If your lawn has been damaged by holiday decorations or jolly ‘ole Saint Nicholas himself, contact Fairway Lawns. We provide our customers quality lawn services and products with completely free estimates– all wrapped up in one company.
