Spring dead spot (SDS) is a fungal disease that affects bermudagrass and is one of the most persistent and devastating. It is caused by one or more species of Ophiosphaerella, which are soil-dwelling fungi that attack the lawn’s roots, crown, stolons, and rhizomes by completely rotting these plant parts in the fall and predisposes the bermudagrass to winter-kill.

The lawn care professionals at Fairway Lawns can help you take control of your lawn’s SDS disease!

What Spring Dead Spot Looks Like?

The bermudagrass lawn disease typically makes itself known in spring (late March, April, and May) as the soil warms and the rest of the turf greens up. The infection sensitizes the damaged turfgrass to winter injury. Symptoms will be worse following cold, wet winters.

If your lawn is infected with SDS you will notice:

  • Bleached-out, circular patches of dead turf
  • Dead spots ranging from a few inches to several feet in diameter
  • An increase in the size of the uncontrolled, diseased patches each year
  • Weeds colonizing the weakened or dead patches

Spring Dead Spot Treatment

Compared to other turfgrass species, bermudagrasses exhibit excellent resistance or tolerance to most problems, but one expectation is SDS. Affected turfgrass will eventually die, and when the affected patches are dead, recovery occurs primarily by the spread of stolons into the dead patches from the outside perimeter. With how destructive SDS is to bermudagrass, you may have to rake out SDS, add topsoil, and apply new grass on top.

The experts at Fairway Lawns can inspect your yard and develop a lawn treatment plan that can restore your bermudagrass and make it healthy once more.
