Polar Vortex Brings Cold Weather

winter snow

The first day of winter doesn’t officially start until December 21st, though the upcoming weather may suggest otherwise. The so-called polar vortex, which sits over the polar region, is pushing down further south than normal in the coming days. The vortex typically contains the coldest air in the Northern Hemisphere, which means much of the United States will have plummeting temperatures thanks to a blast of frigid Arctic air next week.

Areas in the Central and Eastern United States will receive the greatest impact, as well as those living in the central Plains and Great Lakes regions. Single-digit temperatures are likely in the Northern states, though most of our territories will see lows in the 30s and 40s instead. Gusty winds and isolated flurries are also possible in some areas.

The vortex is expected to start over the weekend and continue on through week; keep an eye on the weather in the meantime and remember the four P’s:

People – especially the elderly or disabled
Pets – bring indoors or make sure outside homes are well-insulated
Pipes – drain and cover
Plants – move inside or cover to prevent frost damage
